REACH — European Regulation
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is the European Union's comprehensive regulatory framework governing the production, importation, and use of chemical substances. Established by Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, REACH places the primary responsibility for chemical safety assessment on manufacturers and importers, requiring them to demonstrate that their products can be safely used before they are placed on the market. This regulation applies to all chemical substances manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities of one tonne or more per year, fundamentally transforming how industrial cleaning and hygiene products are formulated, labeled, and distributed across professional sectors.
In the professional cleaning and industrial hygiene sector, REACH compliance is non-negotiable. For manufacturers like Instaquim, operating since 1990 across laundry services, food industry cleaning, HORECA applications, and livestock facilities, REACH ensures that every detergent formulation, disinfectant, and specialized chemical meets stringent safety and environmental standards. The regulation requires detailed documentation of chemical composition, hazard assessment, and safe use instructions—critical for industrial clients who depend on reliable, compliant products. For instance, alkaline degreasers used in food processing must comply with REACH to ensure worker safety and prevent contamination risks. Similarly, disinfectants for sanitary applications require full REACH dossiers proving efficacy without harming healthcare workers or patients.
Practical compliance in industrial operations involves several key steps. Companies must conduct Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that meet REACH requirements, provide clear hazard communication, and ensure substances are not among those restricted or requiring special authorization under Annex XIV. In self-service laundry facilities, for example, concentrated detergents must carry REACH-compliant labels warning of skin irritation or eye damage risks. Automotive cleaning products must document their chemical composition transparently. The livestock sector benefits from REACH-compliant disinfectants that protect animal health while meeting EU safety standards.
The regulation also drives innovation toward safer alternatives. Many manufacturers have reformulated products to replace hazardous substances with safer ones, improving both worker protection and environmental outcomes. This aligns with complementary standards such as ISO 14001 (environmental management) and Ecolabel certification, which increasingly appeal to corporate clients demanding sustainable, REACH-compliant solutions.
Non-compliance carries significant risks: product withdrawals, financial penalties, and reputational damage. Therefore, maintaining updated REACH documentation and staying informed about substance restrictions is essential for any professional chemical supplier operating in the European market.
